Senate President, Senator David Mark has warned proponents of same sex marriage to stop dreaming, saying that such obnoxious acts would not be allowed to rubbish the nation’s hard-earned image and culture.
According to Mark, the bill prohibiting the act was already in place, asserting that anyone caught in the act
will be sentenced to risked 14 years imprisonment.
Mark in a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul Mumeh at the weekend informed Catholic faithful and guests at the civic reception in honour of Cardinal John Onaiyekan in Abuja, that it was a criminal offence for any one to indulge in such an act.
He noted that in spite of pressures from some sections of the international community, including human rights activists, demanding that same sex marriage in Nigeria be legalized, it will not work.
He said: “We will not compromise on this. I want to invite you all to join the crusade of decency in our society. There are many good values we can copy from other societies, but certainly not this one.
“We have to prove to the rest of the world, who are advocates of this unnatural way that we Nigerians promote and respect sanity, morality and humanity. Every individual is a product of the union of a man and woman.”
Mark who acknowledged the cordial relationship between the Nigerian state and the church promised that the National Assembly would ensure religious freedom and peaceful co-existence in Nigeria.
Mark however urged spiritual leaders to continue to pray for good governance, peace and security in the nation.
Earlier in his remarks, Cardinal Onaiyekan thanked Pope Benedict XVI, the government and people of Nigeria for their prayers and support, especially since he was promoted to the College of Cardinals.
The cleric promised to be an ambassador for peace and unity for the nation.
Also, chairman of the reception organising committee, Rev. Father Innocent Jooji, observed that Onaiyekan was a worthy soldier of Christ who brought honour to the nation with his elevation to the College of Cardinals.........
