2012 Hajj: Katsina Female Pilgrims Thwarted From Staying In Saudi

Some female pilgrims from Katsina State who participated at the 2012 hajj exercise attempted to stay behind in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a report of the state House of Assembly committee on monitoring
and evaluation of hajj has revealed.
Presenting the report at the floor of the assembly yesterday, the chairman of the committee, who is also the deputy speaker, Idris Yakubu (PDP, JIbiya), said except for efforts of officials of the state pilgrim’s welfare board and other stakeholders, some female pilgrims could have stayed back as ‘tukaru,’ or  illegal immigrants.
Yakubu said the committee observed that “some female pilgrims attempted to stay back at Makkah as Tukaru but that with the effort of the board officials and other stakeholders, it was averted.
The committee however recommended that women willing to perform the hajj rites “should be identified by their ward or village heads, husbands or close relatives who would give guarantee to the pilgrims welfare board that they will come back immediately after the exercise, failing which the guarantor whould be held responsible.”
After what passed for an extensive deliberation, the state assembly adopted the recommendations of the committee which included that additional seats be sought for the state to enable more people from Katsina State perform subsequent hajj rites.
