NHIS says: Our Drugs Are Not Substandard

The NHIS also said it had developed new and modern strategies for providing risk protection mechanism in the health sector.

The acting Executive Secretary of NHIS, Abdulrahman Sambo, represented by the organisation’s General Manager (Technical Operations), Hope Uweja, stated this in Abuja, during its third enrolLees’ forum to respond to the concerns expressed by clients.

The forum is part of NHIS’ strategies to ensure that stakeholders are updated on the scheme.

According to him, the drugs prescribed under its scheme are “generic not fake.”

Sambo said, “Once drugs are genuine, they are efficacious, whether branded or generic. It is only when they are fake that it becomes a problem. In most health systems, the move is towards the use of generic drugs.

“Increasingly, the cost of drugs is improving. If you can get efficacious good drugs at the best price, you go for them. We always get those complaints but we need to educate them to know the difference between generic and fake.”
