The familiar sounds of a Lagos Bus Stop: traffic horns, motor engines revving, street hawkers shouting, the occasional police siren and Lagos Bus Conductors singing – but why do the Lagos Bus Conductors sing?
“Sometimes people may stand and you keep calling the bus stop – it can even be the place they are going –
but because of the way you call it – they will not understand,” explains one Bus driver.
They are singing the buses different stops and destinations – we call it the Danfo Song.
(Nigeria Transport) Why do Lagos Bus Conductors Sing for work? Find out in the video above!
Lagos Bus Conductors often sing from their buses as they lean out to alert potential passengers to the Danfo’s various destinations or from megaphones at Lagos’s busy bus stops such as Oshodi and Obalende.
“It is for the passengers to know their various bus stops,” explains another Danfo driver. “And we enjoy the word – that’s why we do it that way!”
The bus’s destinations are sung in a rhythmic fashion – “Opebi, Allen, Third Mainland!” – as well as often including the price – “100 Naira Eko!”
None of the other methods of Nigeria transport – okada, taxis, and others – have picked up the habit, though!
The Lagos bus conductors voices are often harsh by the end of the day, but their song adds to the rhythm of life in Nigeria.
